This summer UBC hosted a symposium, “Buddhist Studies Today,” bringing established Buddhist Studies scholars together with the first cohort of recipients of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Dissertation Fellowships in Buddhist Studies through the American Council of Learned Societies. This special event was held on July 7–9 at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies on UBC’s Point Grey Campus. In addition to intensive feedback on the recipients’ projects, the included local students and scholars in a larger discussion of the future of Buddhist studies as an academic pursuit.
Visit their Grants page for more information, or the Facebook page to view photos from the event–which was also covered in the Vancouver Sun. Fourteen recent philosophy grant for scholars came together with Buddhist Studies scholars to discuss their work on issues related to Buddhism and contemporary society.
Although the symposium was not open to the public, Dr. Pauline Yu‘s introductory remarks can be seen here, and Professor Donald Lopez’s keynote address is also available online here.
