The Centre for Southeast Asian Research at the Institute of Asian Research presents a seminar by Dr. Jim Placzek:
“Ordination of Women in Theravada Buddhism”
Date: Friday, 30 Sep 2011; 4.30 – 6.00 PM
Place: Room 120, C.K. Choi Building, UBC Point Grey Campus, 1855 West Mall
This seminar is free.
In this seminar Dr. Placzek will review the ordination of women as female monks (bhikkhuni) on a par with the male monks (bhikkhu), as found in early Buddhism. He will trace that female ordination to modern times where the lineage has died out in Theravada Buddhism, the branch of Buddhism practiced in South East Asia and Sri Lanka. Finally the current situation in Sri Lanka and Thailand will be reviewed, also the situation among Western monks in the Thai Forest Tradition, in particular the branches and affiliates of the Ajahn Chah teaching lineage. There will be time for questions after the presentation.
Dr. Jim Placzek is an Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia. He teaches in the Asian Studies Department at Langara College.
