The Robert H. N Ho Family Foundation announces a set of grant opportunities for scholars and graduate students in Buddhist Studies.
The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation has committed substantial resources to expand the understanding, interpretation and application of Buddhist philosophy in contemporary society.
As part of our long-term effort to develop a Buddhist Learning Network that furthers Buddhist scholarship and enhances its global impact, we offer grants on a competitive basis for dissertation research, postdoctoral research, collaborative research, visiting professorships and new initatives.
GOAL OF GRANTS
Our goal is to promote the visibility and vitality of Buddhist Studies by supporting:
- the understanding of Buddhism in contemporary society;
- the enrichment of current critical scholarship with historical, cultural or philosophical perspectives on the Buddhist tradition;
- interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies;
- a growing international network and community of scholars interested and invested in the new knowledge generated by these endeavors.
TYPES OF GRANTS
The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation offers four different categories of Buddhist Philosophy Grants. Four of these are administered on behalf of the Foundation by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), a private, nonprofit federation of scholarly organizations that advances scholarship by awarding fellowships and strengthening relations among learned societies. The fifth is administered directly by the Foundation.
- Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, supporting research and writing of Ph.D. dissertations of high quality in Buddhist studies.
- Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, supporting outstanding scholars early in their careers who are working on research projects that make substantial, original contributions to the study of Buddhism. We particularly encourage applications for projects that engage with contemporary currents in other fields and disciplines.
- Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Collaborative Research Grant, supporting team-based, interdisciplinary research projects that bring Buddhist scholars together with scholars in other fields to pursue interpretive research projects that relate different Buddhist traditions to each other or relate the broad Buddhist tradition to contemporary concerns in other academic fields, including those concerned with societal problems. Priority will be given to collaborations involving scholars who do not work at the same institution, and to projects that cross national, cultural and linguistic boundaries.
- Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Visiting Professor Grant, enabling Buddhist scholars to teach outside their home institution, with special interest in placements outside of religious studies. We will receive applications from colleges and universities eager to host accomplished scholar-teachers in Buddhist Studies as visiting professors for a semester or an academic year.
- The Foundation continues to support new initiatives that are innovative efforts aimed at removing barriers between scholarly research on Buddhism and its practical application. We seek ambitious, high-impact initiatives that underscore the relevance of Buddhism for a new generation of scholars and educators, artists, and writers—practitioners in these and other fields across the spectrum who are invested in making Buddhism accessible, a useful philosophy with application to everyday life. How might Buddhist ideas open up dialogue, bringing fresh insight to individuals and new approaches to disciplines less familiar with this ancient philosophy? The projects we consider for funding do not follow a prescribed form. We seek research-based, highly original projects that can enhance public awareness, understanding and appreciation of Buddhism in everyday life.
